The Vuforia Creator App is your developer companion app to capture data and test Vuforia targets. Download the powerful tool to collect data for development and test your target datasets when getting started to build your AR applications.
Install the App
Go to Apple’s App Store and download the app on your device. Your Vuforia Credentials are needed for some of the functions in the app but many of its functions don’t require a login.
Device Compatibility
The app is currently available for iPads or iPhones only. A LiDAR equipped iPad Pro or iPhone Pro is required for scanning spaces. See Supported Versions for more details.
Features
The Vuforia Creator App includes:
- Capturing spaces and generating Area Targets out of the captured data.
- Test-drive your Model Targets and Area Targets by detecting and tracking them.
- Record Sessions for playback during app development and testing.

My Assets
When you open the app, the home screen lists all your assets in the All tab. Each asset is marked with an icon to indicate its type. The navigation bar lets you sort for All, Area Targets, Model Targets, Spaces, and Session Recordings.
- Pressing and holding on an asset will bring up a menu to share, rename, or delete the asset, where available.
- Pressing once on a Model Target or Area Target will load it for testing.
- Press the + icon on the lower right to import assets, capture area, or record sessions.
Account
In the Account window, you can access relevant app information as well as logging in with your Vuforia Developer account. Logging in is only necessary if you wish to generate Area Targets from captured spaces.
Creator App – Import Assets
Import Model Targets and Area Targets to test them with the Vuforia Creator App.
- Press the + icon and select Import.
- The app has the parent folder Vuforia Creator. Place your dataset files in this root folder and select either an XML file or ZIP file to import. You can also import ZIP archives conveniently from your “Downloads” or “iCloud” folders.
- For Model Targets, upload the dataset files (DAT & XML) or a ZIP with the two files.
- For Area Targets, upload the dataset files DAT, XML, and 3dt into a folder. The app can also read a ZIP package that contains the three files.
NOTE: When the Creator App imports from a ZIP, it will automatically create a folder where the dataset files are extracted using the dataset name.
Creator App – Area Targets
Capture, generate, and test Area Targets in the Vuforia Creator App.
Capture Area
To scan a space, the device must have a LiDAR sensor. If the app doesn’t have the option to scan a space, a LiDAR sensor wasn’t detected. You will also need to be logged in to generate Area Targets from captured areas.
Workflow
- To start a capture, press the + icon and select Capture Area. The camera will open, and you can start to capture your environment.
- Move the device slowly around and scan your space.
- When done, press Stop and choose to Save Space, Resume Scanning, or Delete Space.
- You have the option to save the captured area as a 3DT file or generate an Area Target from it right-away.
- Saving as a 3DT file lets you transfer and import it for editing and generation using the desktop Area Target Generator. This can be helpful in situations where no Internet connectivity is available in the environment to be captured.
NOTE: To test the Area Target, you need to select the option to Save as Area Target.
- Saving as a 3DT file lets you transfer and import it for editing and generation using the desktop Area Target Generator. This can be helpful in situations where no Internet connectivity is available in the environment to be captured.
- For either saving option, you must provide a name for your Space or the Area Target to proceed.
- To generate your scan as an Area Target, you will need to log in if you haven’t done it already and press Continue.
- The Area Target or Space 3DT file will appear in your assets after completion. Use the filter option on top of the Asset Browser to find the assets.
-
Testing Area Targets that were just generated or imported is largely identical to testing Model Targets. Refer to the next section on how to start testing and use visualization options.
NOTE: To test Area Targets on Android devices or the HoloLens see the Area Target Test App User Guide.
Creator App – Model Targets
Test your Model Targets in the Vuforia Creator App by importing your Model Target.
Press the Model Target asset to start testing, point your camera at the object.
Use the tools from the ellipses button for:
- Changing tracking mode,
- Selecting outline color schemes and outline width.
You can cycle through the Guide Views if the Model Target has more than one of them.
NOTE: To test Model Targets using an Android device see Model Target Test App User Guide.
Vuforia Creator – Session Recording
Use the Vuforia Creator App to create Session Recordings of the objects and environments you want to develop an AR experience for. A Session Recording is a video with pose data embedded in the video file that you can use to play back in the Unity Editor. See Recording and Playback for more details on Session Recordings and Vuforia Play Mode in Unity.
- Press the + icon and select Record Session.
- In the new window, press the red record button to start and again to stop the recording.
- The Session Recording will appear in the window. From here you can long-press the recording to rename or transfer it to your desktop.
NOTE: The recording cannot be played back in the app.
